Over the past few weeks students have learned:
Reading & Social Studies: We finished our book study of Pale as the Moon, a historical fiction novel written by a local author about the first settlements in North Carolina from the point of view of the Native Americans. We've studied characters, setting, and point of view in great detail. Students have also learned about European exploration of North Carolina, Sir Walter Raleigh, and the Lost Colony.
Writing: Students just finished up writing their personal narratives; a story told in first person point of view about a special moment in their lives. These narratives are in students' Google Drive accounts which are accessible at home - ask them to show you! When we track in we are looking forward to a week with our PTA sponsored Writer-in-Residence, Tony Peacock!
Math: We’ve worked through various methods of multiplying multi-digit numbers, using them flexibly considering and applying our knowledge of our base ten system. We are also learning to read math word problems using comprehension strategies to create equations for solving…its fun! A situation equation allows us to rewrite the story in “math language.” We can also look at an equation and create a story to go with it!
Students brought home their Quarter 1 test to analyze their errors over track out – I will also be analyzing the results to direct my instruction when we track back in.
Continue to keep skills sharp over track out! Check out math links on our website.
Science: We’ve finished up our earth materials unit focusing on rocks and minerals. We’ve learned about the different types of rocks and ways that geologists use different properties to identify minerals. Today we reviewed our unit test together and discussed each question before returning to our seats to take the test.
