It is hard to believe that we are beginning our fourth and final nine weeks! We have many fun and interesting things to look forward to this quarter. Before we update you with curriculum news, we wanted to share a few announcements. Track 1 did a fabulous job in the Battle of the Books competition! We are so proud of all the teams that participated and the sportsmanship that was shown by all.
Our trip to Old Salem is right around the corner. We will be sending home more detailed information closer to the actual date. If you are planning on attending make sure you have been cleared as a volunteer. There will be limited seating on the bus so chaperone carpooling is encouraged. Our symphony field trip has been rescheduled to May 14th. Volunteers are not needed for this trip. We are still collecting payments for our second Science is fun field trip(March 4th). If you have not paid, we would like to get that payment as soon as possible. We promise that this is the last field trip payment.
Finally, we are in need of some more pencils! We burn through them like there is no tomorrow! Thank you in advance for your donations!
Here is a quick overview of our focus in the classroom for the coming weeks:
In math we will begin our study of decimals. We will use decimal notations for fractions with denominators 10 or 100, and compare two decimals to the hundredths place by reasoning about their size. We will round and order decimals as well. Upon completion of this unit we will begin our study of the metric system.
In science this quarter we will be turning our attention to the various forces that affect the motion of an object. We will mainly concentrate on magnetism and electricity.
In reading, we will review and expand upon all of the strategies we've learned this year. We will start the quarter with a novel study of The Tale of Despereaux to focus on theme, character development, vocabulary, summarizing, and much more! Then we will focus on poetry and nonfiction, practice test taking skills, and hopefully practice and present Reader's Theater plays after EOGs.
In writing, we will be reviewing and expanding upon all of the genres we've studied all year. Students will be writing an opinion piece about the usefulness of technology in our daily lives, a research piece on a topic related to magnetism or electricity, and a personal narrative on a topic of their choice.
