Wow what a packed week. Here it is.....
Happenings
Math
Today we had a test on area and perimeter. All week we have talked about if you know this...How can you find? If you know the area of the square..How can you find the length of its sides? Please continue to work on multiplication facts and have your children review their math journal nightly.
Social Studies
We continue with our economy unit through the read aloud of One Hen and Beatrice's Goat. Economy concepts are also being explored through the students guided reading books with Mrs. Hanley.
Word Study
This week we did a whole class sort on prefixes. We learned about the root or base word and how the prefix changes the meaning of a word. We also continued our study of the Spot and Dot strategy. I have posted videos on the Language Arts tab. Check them out!
Language Arts
We continue our Historical Fiction unit reading Soft Rain and have focused on theme, mood, historical timelines, points of view, and the authors use of details which give us clues as readers. This coming week we will focus on how the author uses details to connect the theme of the story and how characters tend to ask tough questions through out a historical fiction. As we read we continue to learn about how this historical event unfolded in North Carolina.
Writing
What's your Opinion? Should students only be allowed to eat cafeteria food? We looked at opinion writing and the many elements used to express ones opinion. Nest week we look at whether America should get rid of the Penny? We discuss, read, research, put our thoughts in a graphic organizer and then write a well constructed opinion paragraph.
