We continue to work on various comprehension skills as we research our animals for science. We continue to Stop and Think, which is a hard one for students as they just want to plow through their reading. Summarizing, main idea, inferencing will continue all year long. In writing we are looking at how writing and reading are connected through topic sentences, supporting details and concluding sentences. using transition words, with conjunctions and proper use of commas is another standard we are working towards. this week we start First Hand account vs second hand account as we work on the NC constitution in Social Studies and how the constitution came to be. We will also learn about the Rights of Citizens and how we can exercise our rights as citizens. We have also been having small guided reading groups where student have been assigned various small books in the content of animal adaptations or Government. Students are asked to complete various comprehension activities, work collaboratively and read aloud to me so I can access their reading skills and work habits.
We have been studying the adaptations of animals. Students can explain the difference between behavioral and structural adaptations. Students can draw and label the structure of a dwarf African frog and fiddler crabs. Take a look in their science journals for their observations and notes. this Wednesday they will take a final test on their animal unit.
This is our last week for word study before we return in January. Each Student has a word study contract glued to the front of their word study book with each nights assignments. Please check in with them this week and make sure they are completing their work.
Technology in Writing
We have moved to Google Classrooms where we can push out assignments to the students and collect their work electronically. This allows me to sit on the couch in the evening and comment on their research and writing without having to lug papers around and try to decipher writing. It has been a good experience thus far, and the students have been really good about working out the kinks with us. All of their log-in and procedures are in their seed journals. Over break, I plan to create some screen cast videos and put on the website for you, but that will take some learning and time for me to accomplish. Their final individual project for the animals is due this Friday and choices include a traditional research paper, paperslide video, green screen movie, powerpoint (which they will upload to Google Slides), or a Google slide presentation. Student will present to the class next week. They will have independent work time and HW this week to work on the projects. They should have submitted their animal research notes to me this past Wednesday, which I am currently grading.
We will start assessing students on Monday in fluency and comprehension. They will need to read three passages at a minute each and this will give an insight as to how fluent a reader they are. Then on Wednesday, they will take a 3 minute silent reading passage where they have to circle the best out of three words to make sense of the sentences and overall passage they are reading. This will give me a glimpse into their silent reading comprehension skills. Remember these are a glimpse of the overall student, which we put together with our observations, class work and Case 21 results.
Students will take Case 21 tests the last week of school. Reading will take place on Monday the 14th and this test will cover all comprehension skills since the beginning of the year and math Case 21 will take place on Wednesday the 16th which will cover skills from this quarter.
