We hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday season. We would like to thank everyone for the wonderful presents, treats and gift cards that were given to us. We are truly blessed to have such supportive families.
On Tuesday, January 5th, our second day back, we will be going on a field trip to the NC Symphony. All permission slips have been returned! Thank you! Please have your child dress up for this field trip as it is a real performance of the NC Symphony at Meymandi Concert Hall in Downtown Raleigh.
It is hard to believe that we are now moving into the second semester! That being said, here are some of the many things we will be exploring in the coming weeks.
In math, we will review some of our first semester skills and then we will move to applying the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. In our next unit, we will generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule and identify apparent features of the pattern that were not explicit in the rule itself. Please continue to review all of the multiplication facts with your child nightly. Many students are still struggling with 7s, 8s, 9s and 12s.
In science we will be talking about landforms. We will be studying how the surface of the earth changes due to slow processes such as erosion and weathering, and rapid processes such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.
In reading, we will be starting a unit on historical fiction. We will be reading Soft Rain, which is a story of the Cherokee Trail of Tears, and we will be focusing on theme, character development, and point of view. We will also focus on literature circle/book discussion group procedures as a whole group so that we can move into small book discussion groups towards the end of the quarter.
In writing, we will focus on opinion writing using evidence and examples.
In word study, we will turn our focus to syllable types and focus on using these 6 types to help us decode multi-syllabic words. Students will NOT have typical word study homework for the first 2 weeks of the quarter as we will be focused on learning and applying the different syllable types.
Mark your calendar for these important dates:
January 15th Early Release 1:15pm
January 18th Schools closed
February 12th Early Release 1:15pm
March 3rd Science Fun for Everyone In School Field Trip
March 4th Track out day, Early Release, Report Cards and Battle of the Books Battle Day!
