Upcoming Field Trips: Old Salem permission slips went home in Friday folders this past Friday. We would greatly appreciate it if you would consider paying for this field trip online (via the TCE website). Chaperones are welcome for the Old Salem field trip. Please make sure that you have registered as a volunteer in the office several weeks prior to this field trip. We do check our volunteer clearance before we go.
Interims: All students will receive an interim on Friday. We ask that you please sign and return.
Valentine's Day: On February 12th we will exchange Valentines. We keep this casual in fourth grade and participation is optional. We do ask that if your child chooses to participate in this activity, that they include everyone in the homeroom class. Homeroom lists can be found at the end of this newsletter.
Here’s what we are learning…
In math, we are continuing our work with fractions. This is a long unit that encompasses most of third quarter. Students have done well understanding how to determine equivalency. We will begin working on converting fractions from improper to mixed numbers later this week. We will also compare fractions with unlike denominators and the process of finding common denominators.
In science, we are continuing our unit on landforms. We have studied physical and chemical weathering, fast and slow erosion, and deposition. We have done many interesting investigations and will end the unit by creating buildings out of marshmallows and toothpicks to test for stability in the event of an earthquake.
In the coming weeks we will move to Social Studies. We will begin our study of market economy and how it impacts life in North Carolina.
In Reading, we are finishing up our unit on Historical Fiction. The students have done a wonderful job learning about theme, setting and character development in the context of the Trail of Tears. We will spend the next two weeks studying poetry. We will focus on poetry elements as well as figurative language. Students will be asked to present a poem to the class at the end of the 2 weeks (Feb. 12) to practice both fluency and comprehension.
In writing, students have been practicing outlining their ideas and writing an organized draft of an opinion essay. Students are in the process of brainstorming an opinion essay on the Trail of Tears.
