ELA News:
We are finishing up our read aloud mentor text, Pale as the Moon, and are focusing on these 3 objectives:
RL4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text
RL4.6 Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the differences between first and third person narratives
RL4.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text
In writing we are finishing up our personal narratives with peer revising, editing and publishing. Students have been taking a break from their narratives this past week as we had our PTA sponsored Writer in Residence, Tony Peacock, joining us daily for writing instruction. He brings a wealth of knowledge with him and the kids found him very engaging. THANK YOU to the Turner Creek PTA!
We will return to regular word study classwork and homework this week.
Math News:
In math we are working on multi-digit multiplication. Students have learned to solve multiplication problems using four different strategies. As a whole, the group is doing well with this concept. For the remainder of the quarter, we will be working on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and problem solving.
4.NBT.5: Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
In Social Studies, we have begun studying arrival of Europeans in North Carolina and their impact on Native Americans.
Important Information and Reminders:
As we mentioned at Open House, one of the ways of rewarding positive behavior in our classes is giving "lottery" tickets. If their ticket is chosen, students can choose from a variety of rewards, one of which is a trip to the treasure box. We have lottery drawings weekly. We are gladly accepting donations of any small trinkets or dollar store items. The kids look forward to this and we like to have a nice "stash" for them to choose from. Thanks in advance for your help on this!
Battle of Books Permission Forms are due by this Friday!!!
