ELA News:
This past week we finished our first read aloud, Stone Fox. Although the ending was tragic, it enabled us to have great class discussions and share our opinions about theme and author's purpose.
We have started our second reading unit for this quarter; our focus is on character study as well as details in texts that describe setting and major events. In addition, we will be studying point of view and using context clues to figure out new words. We were able to identify and provide evidence for character traits of both Little Willy and Stone Fox before finishing our study of Stone Fox.
We have started the "before reading" work for our new read aloud text, Pale as the Moon. This is a historical fiction novel that complements Mrs. Schmedding's upcoming social studies unit on the history of North Carolina. This week we previewed the book and made predictions based on evidence, and analyzed the Historical Notes and Dates to Remember sections of the text.
In writing, students are working on personal narratives, or stories based on special memories. This week students focused and organized their ideas using a graphic organizer. Now we are currently drafting, focus on the middle and WOW moment (most important part.)
In word study, we will be studying the six types of syllables for the remainder of the quarter.
Math & Science News:
In math this week we began talking about prime, and composite numbers, as well as multiples and factors. Please continue reviewing the multiplication facts with your child as we will begin 2 digit multiplication at the end of this week. We do spend a great deal of time working on this and only move to the standard algorithm towards the end of the unit. I will be sending out a link for you that will show the methods we will be using. Please take a few minutes to view it.
Here are our Wake County goals in math for the remainder of the quarter:
4.NBT.5: Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
4.OA.4: Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is prime or composite.

We are at the end of our science unit, and students will be taking their unit assessment on Thursday. The kids have enjoyed this unit and have learned a lot. From here we will move into social studies. We will be studying the history of North Carolina. In our first unit we will be discussing the impact settlers had on the Native Americans as they moved across the three regions of NC.
Important Information and Reminders:
Interims went home on Friday. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact us. We will be starting conferences toward the end of first quarter. Be on the lookout for an online conference signup (from signup genius ) to be emailed soon.
As we mentioned at Open House, one of the ways of rewarding positive behavior in our classes is giving "lottery" tickets. If their ticket is chosen, students can choose from a variety of rewards, one of which is a trip to the treasure box. We have lottery drawings weekly. We are gladly accepting donations of any small trinkets or dollar store items. The kids look forward to this and we like to have a nice "stash" for them to choose from. Thanks in advance for your help on this!
Important Upcoming Dates:
No School: Sept. 1
Early Release/Trackout/Report Cards: Sept. 5
