Important Announcements & Updates:
We want to begin by saying thank you for all of the wonderful Valentines cards and gifts! We feel so loved and appreciated.
We are currently collecting giftcards for our baskets for Frogapalooza (which will be April 16th.) Frogapalooza is our Spring Carnival and one of our biggest fundraisers of the year! The giftcards will be combined into 2 class baskets that will be auctioned during Frogapalooza. So far, between the 2 classes, we’ve only received 4 contributions. L If you can donate a giftcard, in any amount, we’d really appreciate it! You should have also received emails from our Room Moms, Maura DuBrow or Suzanne Gifford, about this fundraiser.
Next Wednesday, March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’s Birthday. The school is celebrating by having Book Character Dress up Day! We are also having a book drive and asking students to bring in new or gently used books. The books are going to the Wake County Wake Up and Read program. They are especially in need of 3rd-5th grade reading material.
We Are Learning:
In math we have just completed our study of ordering and comparing fractions. Students learned how to compare fractions by using an area model, a number line and by finding common denominators. They have also learned to add and subtract mixed numbers. Now we are focusing on multiplying fractions by a whole number.
In Social studies we have started our unit on economy. We have been talking about market economy, opportunity costs, supply and demand, and income. This past week we started Junior Achievement – a local volunteer has been coming in to supplement our economy unit.
In reading, we finished up our unit on figurative language and poetry. Students are well versed in writing, identifying and analyzing similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, alliteration, hyperbole and personification. Students also learned about poetry structure and comprehension. We are currently studying the theme of courage across texts from different cultures. We are reading both drama and picture books.
In writing we are currently working on a Social Studies Vocabulary paper slide.
Next week we will not have word study homework since we will be focused on Social Studies Projects, Junior Achievement, Science Fun for Everyone in school field “trip” and Battle of the Books!
Important Dates:
March 3 Science Made Fun
March 4 Battle of the books/Early Release/Trackout and report cards
March 28 Track in
April 14th Old Salem (arrive at 7:15am)
April 16th Frogapalooza
